Katarina began skating on ice when she was five. Her natural talents became more apparent and she was accepted at a Karl-Marx-Stadt school, which focuses on youngsters with athletic aptitude. It was here that she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt caught the eye of all and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating gold medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. It was her victory from four years prior that was a bit more tense. The free skater lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt is the first figure skater female to have won the same event twice since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run as an actor. While she was not able to get a medal, she enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
